In an era dominated by large retail corporations, Lee Thiam Wah’s journey is a compelling example of determination, vision and entrepreneurial resilience. As the founder of 99 Speedmart, he built a modest grocery venture in Klang into Malaysia’s leading neighbourhood mini-market network, which celebrated its 3,000th Malaysian outlet in November 2025, according to the company’s timeline.

Born and raised in Klang, Lee came from a financially modest background and experienced physical disabilities from childhood. Rather than allowing these circumstances to define him, he drew strength from his grandmother’s belief that, although he faced physical limitations, his abilities and potential remained intact. That encouragement helped shape the determination that would later drive his business success.

Lee began earning an income at the age of 14, selling snacks outside his family home. By 23, he had saved RM17,000—enough to establish his first sundry shop, Pasar Raya Hiap Hoe, in 1987. Operating this small store gave him firsthand insight into local consumer habits, competitive pricing and the importance of meeting everyday household needs.

After selling the business several years later, Lee took the next step in his retail journey. In 1992, he opened Pasar Mini 99 in Klang Utama, marking the beginning of a new model focused on accessible, value-driven neighbourhood shopping. His ambition was not simply to operate a single store, but to build a reliable chain that could provide convenient and affordable essentials to communities throughout Malaysia.

The business was rebranded as 99 Speedmart in 2000. The name reflects Lee’s philosophy of continually pursuing excellence: even if perfection is never fully reached, businesses should consistently strive to offer customers better value, service and convenience.

From its origins in Klang, 99 Speedmart grew into a nationwide retail force under Lee’s leadership. The company expanded across Peninsular Malaysia and into East Malaysia, opening thousands of outlets and becoming a familiar presence in residential neighbourhoods. Its growth was reinforced by investment in regional distribution centres, allowing the business to improve stock availability, manage operations efficiently and support its rapidly increasing store network.

Today, 99 Speedmart ranks among Malaysia’s most frequently visited community retail chains. Its model is built around simple but important principles: locations close to customers’ homes, products suited to daily needs and prices designed to remain affordable for ordinary households.

A significant milestone came in 2024, when 99 Speedmart was listed on Bursa Malaysia. The initial public offering strengthened the company’s financial position and provided a platform for further expansion as it continues to build its presence in Malaysia’s competitive retail sector.

Lee’s achievements have attracted recognition from Forbes and other business publications, which have highlighted both the growth of 99 Speedmart and the personal perseverance behind its creation. His path to success demonstrates that formal qualifications alone do not determine entrepreneurial potential. Practical experience, close attention to customers, calculated risk-taking and sustained commitment can be equally powerful.

Lee Thiam Wah’s influence on Malaysia’s retail industry is now clear. Through 99 Speedmart, he has helped reshape how millions of Malaysians buy everyday groceries and household essentials. His journey—from selling snacks as a teenager to leading one of the country’s largest retail brands—remains a powerful reminder that resilience, strategic thinking and a long-term vision can turn a small beginning into a lasting national success.
